RESERVE — The revolving door on the East St. John High baseball coach’s office is spinning once more.
After just one season as head coach of the Wildcats, Jade Falgoust has moved on to become an assistant coach at Archbishop Rummel in Metairie. Falgoust will be working under head coach Nick Monica, who also is Falgoust’s cousin.
“I didn’t go looking for a job,” Falgoust said. “I just got a phone call. I thought I would be (at East St. John) for a while. I had to think long and hard about leaving. I will miss the school. I’ll miss the kids.”
Falgoust, a 2006 graduate of Riverside Academy, spent two seasons as an East St. John assistant under previous head coach Matt White. When White left to take a job in Mississippi in May of 2015, Falgoust was promoted to head coach.
“Everyone at East St. John has been so great,” Falgoust said. “They gave me the opportunity to be a head coach, a young head coach, at a 5A program. They were great to me. It’s hard to pass up an opportunity to coach with family.”
Monica is the son of St. Charles Catholic head football coach Frank Monica, the brother of St. Charles softball coach Ty Monica and the cousin of St. Charles baseball coach Wayne Stein.
East St. John has seen a long list of coaches on the baseball diamond in recent years. Falgoust was the fourth in six years. Since the team won the Class 4A state championship with a perfect 28-0 record in 1990 under Johnny Owen, the team has seen 16 different head coaches, including eight who coached only one year. None stayed more than four years.
The Wildcats also have not made the playoffs since 2007. Falgoust’s team finished 13-8 overall and 4-6 in District 7-5A play.
“They have a lot of talent,” Falgoust said. “Those are some great kids.”
Wildcats rising senior outfielder C.J. Turner has had four head coaches in his time at East St. John.
“It’s hard,” he said. “A different coach every year you’ve got to expect something different. You don’t know if you’re going to play. Another coach comes in and he might think someone else is better than you so now you’re sitting on the bench. You’ve got to work harder. I just like playing.”
ESJH athletic director Aldon Foster said Wendell Henderson and Waylon Martin are leading the team through the summer.
“We’ll take at look at it after that,” Foster said. “We’re looking for somebody who’s in it for the long haul and not just looking to put something up on his resume.”
