Sex offender sent to jail for failing to register

CONVENT — A St. James Parish man is facing a seven-year prison sentence following his guilty plea last week on a sex offender charge.

Ray Rheams, 54, of Gramercy pleaded guilty to failure to register and notify as a sex offender or child predator second offense and was sentenced to seven years with the Louisiana Department of Corrections with credit for time served.

The St. James Parish Sheriff’s Office announced Rheams’ arrest in May of 2015 for failure to register and notify as sex offender, indicating his address as 206 S. Plum St. in Gramercy.

Rheams’ plea was announced Friday as part of a release from the 23rd Judicial District Attorney’s Office, which covers St. James Parish, identifying the defendants who pleaded guilty to various charges between May 16-20.

Assistant District Attorney Steven Tureau prosecuted Rheams’ case, and the presiding judge was Judge Jason Verdigets.

Two additional St. James Parish residents pleaded guilty to charges in Ascension Parish last week.

• Michael Laiche, 27, of Paulina pleaded guilty to possession of a firearm or carrying of a concealed weapon by a convicted felon and was sentenced to 10 years with the Louisiana Department of Corrections. He was  given credit for time served.

• Brent Louque, 36, of Lutcher pleaded guilty to attempted possession of a firearm or carrying of a concealed weapon by a convicted felon and was sentenced to six years with the Louisiana Department of Corrections with credit for time served.

Assistant District Attorneys Joni Buquoi and Sara Clarke prosecuted the cases with Judge Jessie LeBlanc serving as the presiding judge.
