SULPHUR — The St. Charles Comets went from high emotions to low from Friday to Saturday, from beating archrival Riverside Academy one day, to losing in the Class 2A state championship game the next.

St. Thomas Aquinas defeated St. Charles Catholic 3-1 to capture its first baseball state championship. The Comets are still looking for theirs after taking home their sixth runner-up trophy.

“We’ll win one one day,” St. Charles Catholic baseball coach Wayne Stein said. “Today just wasn’t the day.”

Falcons pitcher Alex Egan threw a game MVP performance, holding the Comets to five hits, walking none and striking out eight. Not in the stats but equally important, he got St. Charles to fly out nine times.

Comets pitcher Brennan Gilberti gave up five hits, walked two and struck out one.

Lloyd Nash drove in the Comets’ lone run in the third inning with a solid single to right field that scored pinch runner Justin DuBose.

St. Thomas Aquinas scored one run in the bottom of the third, then added two in the fifth on a triple by Champ Artigues.
