A local man died at the hospital during the early morning hours Monday, the result of injuries suffered during a four-vehicle wreck on Interstate 10, authorities said.

Louisiana State Police Troop B spokeswoman Melissa Matey said the crash claimed the life of 28-year-old Felton Lewis of Reserve.

“Lewis and his front seat passenger, Jarvis Cosy, 21, were transported to area hospitals with injuries,” Matey said. “The investigating Trooper was conducting the follow up investigation at the hospital when Lewis began complaining of chest pain. He was pronounced deceased a short time later.”

Matey said Lewis was not wearing a seat belt at the time of the crash and impairment is not suspected. A toxicology test will be performed following an autopsy.

The crash remains under investigation.

State Police began investigating the crash shortly after midnight on Interstate 10 west at milepost 213.2 in St. Charles Parish.

The initial investigation indicated Lewis was driving a 2005 Chevrolet Malibu west on I-10 in the left lane approaching traffic that was stopped due to a previous crash at milepost 212.

The Malibu struck the rear of a 2013 Chevrolet Traverse, driven by Melva Barabin, 49, of LaPlace, which pushed the Traverse into the rear of a 2006 Jeep Commander.

The Commander was driven by Rakeedra Woolridge, 31, of Ponchatoula.

The Commander was then pushed into the rear of a 2016 Jeep Compass, driven by Lauren Jimerson, 25, of Belle Chasse.

All drivers suffered minor injuries, Matey said.
