LAPLACE — St. Charles Catholic baseball coach Wayne Stein canceled a scheduled tune-up game Saturday, deeming it unnecessary.
Apparently, he was right. The Comets, the No. 2 seed in the Class 2A bracket, motored just fine Monday.
St. Charles jumped on No. 31 East Feliciana, scoring 8 runs in the first three innings on the way to a 10-0 5-inning victory.
The Comets (24-7) got eight hits while three Comets pitchers held the Tigers to no runs and one hit.
Justin Ory got the rout started with an RBI single in the first inning to score Lloyd Nash, who walked. Dane Authement also walked, advanced on Ory’s single and scored on a passed ball.
The Comets added five runs in the second inning, batting around the order with the help of three walks. Authement drove in one run with a single, and Zach Weber drove in two more.
A bases loaded walk to Authement in the third gave the Comets another run.
Zach Roussel got the start for St. Charles and was effective from the beginning. In three innings he gave up one hit (a bunt), walked none and struck out three. He retired the Tigers in order the first two innings.
The Comets advance to play No. 15 Sterlington in a best 2-out-of-3 series. The first game is 4 p.m. Friday at SCC. The second game is 10 a.m. Saturday. If necessary, Game 3 will follow.
No. 6 Riverside Academy defeated No. 27 North Caddo 12-2 in Tuesday’s bi-district playoff game. The Rebels will play No. 11 Newman in a best 2-out-of-3 series beginning at 4 p.m. Friday. The second game is 1 p.m. Saturday. If necessary, Game 3 will follow.
