NEW IBERIA — The St. Charles Catholic golf team finished third in the Division III, District IV golf tournament held Monday at Squirrel Run Golf Club of New Iberia, earning all five golfers a spot in next week’s regional round.
The regional meet will be held Tuesday at The Atchafalaya Golf Course at Idlewild in Patterson
As a team, the Comets shot a 342 to finish in third place.
Catholic High of New Iberia took first with a 334 and Newman finished second with a 338.
Riverside Academy shot 437 and did not qualify for the next round.
Other teams competing in the district match were Delcambre, Loreauville, DeLaSalle, Curtis and Patterson. One golfer from Haynes Academy competed individually for a spot in the regionals.
Individually, St. Charles’ golfers lived up to coach Gary Zerinque’s expectations, as well.
Mikey Landry led the way with a 79, Jeffrey Cupit shot 82, Daniel Jaubert shot 90, Will Torres shot 91 and Jacob Jensen scored 96.
The highest score is not included in the final tally.
The top three teams plus the top four individuals qualify for the next round.
“It was very close at the top,” Zeringue said of Monday’s match.
Landry is hoping to build on his success during last year’s season. The sophomore leader of the St. Charles team was the only Comets golfer to qualify for last year’s state meet. He finished fifth out of 48 golfers in Division III. This year’s state meet will be played May 2-3 at Farm d’Allie and The Wetlands in Lafayette.
Riverside Academy’s Cash Hotard led the Riverside team with a 99, followed by Byron Gelcrease at 110 and Harrison Heckathorn at 113.
Elliot Veron and Buddy Duhe both shot 115.
