DESTREHAN — A St. Charles Parish man first tried to confront his estranged wife at their son’s school Monday afternoon before escalating the conflict by attempting to run over the woman and child and eventually committing suicide, authorities said.
Mengkai Zhang, 47, of Destrehan showed up at St. Charles Borromeo School in Destrehan shortly before 4:40 p.m. Monday and engaged in a “little bit of a confrontation” with his wife, who was there to pick up their 4-year-old son, St. Charles Parish Sheriff’s Office Captain Patrick Yoes said.
According to authorities, Zhang went back to his Toyota Camry and drove it into his family, striking the woman and child.
While fleeing the scene, authorities said Zhang struck two occupied parked vehicles.
Yoes said none of the victims were run over, adding the mother and son suffered “minor” injuries and a third victim in one of the parked vehicles also sustained a minor injury.
During their attempted-murder investigation, St. Charles authorities learned the New Orleans Police Department was working a suicide involving Zhang that took place shortly after 6 p.m.
Police believe Zhang killed himself by jumping off Interstate 10 Westbound near the Industrial Canal bridge.
His body was identified at the scene, along with the Camry used during the hit and run in Destrehan.
“The case is still being handled by the detective assigned,” Yoes said Thursday. “There are no additional suspects.”
