LAPLACE — The St. John the Baptist Parish Sheriff’s Office Training Division worked with the St. John District Attorney’s Office to present legal aspects of domestic violence training last week at Patrol Headquarters in LaPlace.

Amy Richard, an assistant district attorney with the 40th Judicial District Court, led the training that focuses on laws pertaining to domestic violence, skills and strategies for officers, investigations and report writing, officer liability and resources.

In Louisiana, Richard reported, more than 62,000 women seek services of shelters.

An excess of 50 percent of men who frequently assault their wives are reported to frequently assault their children, she said.

Building stronger cases leads to effective prosecutorial screening, resulting in better outcomes such as jail time for abusers and weeding out abuse of the system, Richard said.
