Sports briefs: Ursin named Gatorade Player of the Year

Destrehan basketball player Cara Ursin has been named the Louisiana Gatorade Player of the Year for the second year in a row, it was announced last week. Ursin, a 5-foot-7 junior guard, averaged 25 points, 12.9 rebounds, 7.3 steals, six assists and 5.5 blocks per game this season for the District 6-5A champion Lady Wildcats (25-3).  She recorded 19 double-doubles, four triple-doubles and one quadruple-double (24 points, 12 assists, 12 steals and 10 rebounds against St. Katherine Drexel).

She is only the fourth player to ever receive the award in back-to-back seasons.

St. Charles hosting April golf tournament

The St. Charles Catholic High School Quarterback Club will hold its annual Ray Laiche Memorial Golf Tournament April 16 at Riverlands Golf and Country Club in LaPlace.

The cost is $100 per player, $400 per team and $100 to sponsor a hole.

A Gold Sponsorship package, which includes entry fee for a team and a hole sponsorship, is available for $500. There will be a silent auction throughout the day. Donations are being accepted. An entry form may be downloaded at
stcharlescatholic.org.

East St. John’s alumni golf tournament set

East St. John is hosting its first alumni golf tournament June 11 at Belle Terre Country Club in LaPlace. The pre-registration deadline is June 6. The cost is $100 per player or $400 per foursome. Sponsorships are available.  Entry forms can be picked up at East St. John High, at Belle Terre Country Club and at the St. John Parish Recreation Office. The River Parish Hornets Youth AAU boys and girls track and field team is open to children ages 6 to 16  will begin competing April 26.
