St. John Public Schools name District Students of the Year

RESERVE — Carlo Travis, Jenna Necaise and Lori Chen have been named District Students of the Year.
The St. John the Baptist Parish Public School District recognized the students with a public announcement Thursday morning.
“These students represent the very best of the kind of students we have here in St. John the Baptist Parish Public Schools,” Superintendent Kevin George said. “We are so very proud of them and all their accomplishments.”
Student candidates are evaluated on academic achievement, school and community service, recognition and leadership, portfolio presentation and written and verbal communication skills.
Fifth Grade
Carlo Travis is the Fifth Grade Student of the Year.
He is a student at Garyville/Mt. Airy Math and Science Magnet School, where he serves as class president. He is also a member of the 4-H and Beta clubs and is on the football team. He has been on the Principal’s List since 2010 and represented his school last year at the District Spelling Bee.
The 11-year-old said he wants to explore many occupations, including lawyer, doctor, video game producer, scientist and architect. He said the three issues that are most important to him are his education, career and behavior.
Travis is the son of Carlo and Nicole Travis of LaPlace.
Eighth Grade
Jenna Necaise is the Eighth Grade Student of the Year.
She is a student at John L. Ory Communication Arts Magnet School, where she serves as secretary/treasurer on the Student Council.
She is a senior anchor and producer for the WJLO Studio, where she has been involved for the past three years, and is co-captain of the volleyball team. She also participates in peer tutoring and Junior Beta. This year, she won first place in geography at the District Social Studies Fair, was named the Student of the Quarter by the Rotary Club and is on the Principal’s List.
She aspires to be a neurosurgeon.
Jenna is the daughter of John and Pamela Necaise of LaPlace.
Twelfth Grade
Lori Chen is the Twelfth Grade Student of the Year.
She is a student at East St. John High School, where she serves as secretary of the Future Business Leaders of America. She has been an active member of the Louisiana Technology Student Association, serving as an officer for three years and as the state president last year.
She placed first in the District Christmas Card Competition two years in a row and this year placed first in the State Poster Competition for Senior Beta Club.
After graduation, she plans to attend college and major in studio art, although she plans to explore other careers as well.
Chen is the daughter of Xiao Ling and Zhao Hua Chen of LaPlace.
