Keller:Veterans Day, voting are treasured hallmarks

Published 12:08 am Saturday, November 7, 2015

Everything we enjoy in this free country can be attributed to the men and women who served in our Armed Forces.

America is one nation, under God, protected by the unselfish service and sacrifice of our veterans.

On Wednesday/Nov. 11 we celebrate Veterans Day. Our veterans deserve special recognition for the freedoms we all enjoy.

This is one of my favorite holidays.

Being a patriotic person and loving my country, I never fail to take advantage of the right to participate in the Democratic process.

On Saturday, Nov. 21, we will have an opportunity to vote, unafraid of being harassed and choosing a candidate of our choice.

It’s not only a privilege, but a duty.

I’m always reminded to give thanks when I hear the words of the following 19th century song written by Katherine Lee Bates:

O beautiful for spacious skies,

For amber waves of grain,

For purple mountain majesties

Above the fruited plain!

O beautiful for patriot dream

That sees beyond the years

Thine alabaster cities gleam

Undimmed by human tears!

America! America!

God shed His grace on thee

And crown thy good with brotherhood

From sea to shining sea!

Let’s enjoy the holiday.

Be grateful and remember freedom is not free. Many men and women paid the price.
