NEW ORLEANS — St. Charles Catholic is in the midst of a banner golf season, and it put up the score to match at Monday’s district golf match at Lakewood Country Club.

The Comets earned third place with a score of 330, punching SCC’s ticket to Tuesday’s regional match at the Atchafalaya at Idlewild course in Patterson. The top four teams from the regional advanced, including district champion Catholic-New Iberia (307), Newman (311) and Patterson (336).

Cameron Torres led the Comet players with a score of 78. Mikey Landry shot 80. Jacob Jensen and Emile Cupit each shot 86 for SCC.

“Shooting the score we did, we thought we might be a little more competitive for first or second place,” St. Charles coach Gary Zeringue said. “This was one of our better scores ever at district. Everyone shot their average for us. There weren’t many birdies, but everyone performed well.

“Our regional is going to be a challenging one. Dunham, University, Parkview Baptist … these are all tradition-rich golf schools. I’m confident this will be one of the toughest regionals in our state regardless of division.”

Zeringue noted that the back nine was a much different animal than the front.

“The course dried up at that point,” Zeringue said. “It played entirely different. It didn’t make more than a three or four stroke difference, though.”

Riverside finished 6th at the district match. Berwick, De La Salle, John Curtis and Delcambre also competed.
