The deputy’s name is Cpl. Burt Hazeltine.

Sheriff Greg Champagne said his office is working the shooting, which took place on U.S. 90 near Louisiana Street in Paradis.

“The deputy was directing traffic in a school zone when he was shot multiple times in an apparent ambush,” Champagne said. “The suspect is in custody.”

Hazeltine was transported to University Hospital in New Orleans. Sheriff’s Office officials said he is listed in stable, but guarded condition.

Traffic is being diverted on Highway 90 in the Paradis area from four lanes to two lanes.
