Rev. Msgr. Francis J. Amedee, 90, a native of Lutcher and resident of Thibodaux, passed away Thursday, April 9, 2015.
Visitation will be from 8 a.m. until funeral time, Tuesday, April 14 at St. Joseph Co-Cathedral in Thibodaux. A Catholic funeral Mass will be held at 11 a.m. Tuesday at the Church, followed by a burial in the church cemetery.
He was survived by his sisters, Evelyn Zeringue and Shirley Crocker; and brother, Gerald Amedee. He was preceded in death by his parents, Ambroise Amedee and Floresca Waguespack Amedee; brothers, Clifford, Clifton, Nolan, Whitney, Laurant, Ernest and Norman Amedee; and sisters, Emily Amedee and Carmen Amedee Bourgeois.
After having attended St. Joseph Seminary from 1940-1943 and Notre Dame Seminary in New Orleans from 1943-1948, he was ordained at St. Louis Cathedral in New Orleans by Archbishop Joseph Francis Rummel. He was the founding Pastor at St. Gregory in Houma from 1963-1970, when the school and parish were formed. He then became Pastor of St. Joseph Co-Cathedral in Thibodaux where he remained for 30 years.
He was a humble servant of God whose accomplishments are too numerous to mention. He did not let the walls of his church prevent him from helping others who were in need of his spiritual strength and foresight. He was a friend to many, a devout priest, a gifted administrator, and a visionary for various projects that stand as a testament to his resolve. His tireless dedication and skillful organizational abilities enhanced St. Gregory, the City of Thibodaux, St. Joseph Co-Cathedral, St. Joseph Elementary School, The Diocese of Houma-Thibodaux, and many other religious projects that stand as monuments to his thoughtful community commitment.
After seeing one of his brothers move to an assisted living facility in Baton Rouge, he envisioned and founded St. Joseph Manor, a non-profit assisted living facility in Thibodaux. He also encouraged the building of Cardinal Place, a non-profit independent living facility presently under construction adjacent to St. Joseph Manor.
In lieu of flowers, it was Monsignor Amedee’s wish that donations be made to the Diocese of Houma-Thibodaux for seminarian education. Donations should be made in memory of Rev. Msgr. Francis J. Amedee.
