RESERVE — The East St. John boys track and field team is one for one in meets this season, taking first place at the Crawfish Relays at St. James last weekend.
Dontrell Allen, Brian Davis and the 4×400 relay team highlighted the competition for ESJ, each capturing individual first place honors. Allen took first in the 100 meters, recording a time of 10.7 seconds. Davis finished first in the 1600 with a time of 4 minutes and 58 seconds, while the relay squad (DaQuan Cross, Brian Kane, Brian Davis and Darius Rixner) finished with a time of 3:35 to top the field.
Others who excelled included Kane (second in the 1600, 5:06); Cross (second, 300 hurdles, 46.17); Johnell Crockett (third, 3200, 11:30), and Dwyane Barramin (third, 100, 11.01).
East St. John coach Greg Gathers said his team has been dealing with the injury bug, most notably going without Darius Lipps, a perennial contender for state honors in the 100. But, Gathers said, he’s excited about the depth his team has shown to overcome that loss and others.
“This week, we’re going to start getting people back and we’ll have a chance to see what our relay teams can do closer to full strength,” Gathers said. “But right now, I have to be very pleased with the results.
“We’ve moved some guys around and they’ve really stepped up in different roles. Some younger guys have answered the call and that’s always a very positive sign for your team and your program.”
