LULING — As volunteers continue to sign up for Saturday’s spring Trash Bash event, organizers are busy behind the scenes putting together a fun celebration in honor of the event’s hard-working volunteers.

The seventh annual event will be held from 8 until 11:30 a.m. Saturday with an outdoor celebration afterwards until 1 p.m. at the Edward A. Dufresne Community Center, 274 Judge Edward Dufresne Parkway in Luling.

To sign up for Trash Bash, visit scptrashbash.org or call 985-331-8604. All work equipment will be provided, including trash bags, drinks and T-shirts.

Previous volunteers are asked to re-wear their Trash Bash T-shirts if available. New volunteers who wish to reserve a specific T-shirt size should sign up as soon as possible. Trash pickers will be given to groups on a first-to-register basis.

The “after-party with a purpose” will feature hot dogs, hamburgers, chips, pastalaya, smoked sausage, dessert, drinks and more. The Wetland Watchers of Destrehan’s Harry Hurst Middle School will host their popular live animal and educational displays.

The event will also feature face painting, games and door prizes. There will also be a table set up with information promoting the parish’s recycling bin drop-off program; however, this event is not a recycling drop off.

The Oldies but Goodies will provide musical entertainment.

New this year, teams will report on their trash-bashing progress using a new digital database reporting system at the celebration on their mobile devices or laptops, allowing for day-of statistical reporting.

In addition, groups contributing the most volunteers and picking up the largest amount of trash will receive awards. The Trash Bash committee will also present its Trash Bash Citizenship Award to an individual and/or group for outstanding contributions to the planning and development of the Trash Bash event.

Verification certificates are also available for young people needing service hours for school or church requirements. Volunteers may clean or beautify an area of their own choosing or be assigned an area.
