ST. CHARLES — A Luling man was killed Sunday after his truck ran off the road and overturned, authorities said.

Louisiana State Police Troop B was notified of the crash shortly before 6 p.m. Sunday on U.S. 90 west near Willowdale Drive in St. Charles Parish.

The driver, who was killed, was identified as Randell Kotz, 56, of Luling.

Trooper Melissa Matey said preliminary investigation revealed Kotz was driving a 2004 Ford Expedition west on U.S. 90.

“For unknown reasons, the Ford struck the median on the left then swerved back to the right and ran off the roadway,” Matey said. “The vehicle overturned, and Kotz was ejected.”

Kotz was initially taken to St. Charles Hospital, then transferred to the Interim LSU Hospital Level 1 Trauma Center, where he died as a result of his injuries.

Speed and lack of seat belt use are factors of the crash, according to State Police.

Matey said it is unknown if impairment played a role in the wreck. She said an autopsy would be performed.
