DESTREHAN — Harry Hurst Middle School recently held its annual science fair with over 225 project entrees.
More than 30 members of the River Parishes community from Valero St. Charles, Atmos Energy, Monsanto, Motiva-Shell, Shell Pipeline, Dow St. Charles Operations, St. Charles Parish Rotary, St. Charles RSVP, St. Charles Parish Hospital, Intertek St. Rose, Hurst PTO, local retired teachers and students from Nicholls State and Southeastern University volunteered as judges.
The science fair experience provided many students with their first opportunity to be interviewed while presenting their research plans, procedures, experimental results and conclusions to an outside expert.
Science fairs are a valuable experience because students have the freedom to choose topics in which they have the greatest interest, plan the entire experiment and, in addition to science inquiry skills, utilize many language arts and math skills to achieve the final results.
