LAPLACE — An inspired second-half defensive effort Saturday guided St. Charles Catholic to its third consecutive victory, as the Comets went on the road to best Ascension Christian Academy, 37-28.

The Comets held the Lions to just eight second half points, including a fourth quarter that saw St. Charles outscore ACA (5-6) 13-3.

Jordan Arceneaux scored 13 to lead SCC. Jobe Kelly added 10.

“We really extended our defense and picked them up full court,” St. Charles coach Kemper Todd said. “We had to pick up the pace.

Our defense was obviously the difference after halftime. (Kelly) hit a pair of really big 3’s (in the fourth quarter) that helped us get the edge and eventually the win.”

St. Charles improved to 5-8 this season with the win, and turns its attention to Holden Thursday night in another road game.

“We’re going to play a very athletic team that loves to press,” Todd said. “A lot like the teams in our district. With both games on the road this week, I think it’s a good barometer for us to see where we are and how far we’ve come.”

SCC has a challenging week on deck as well, with a rematch with Lutcher slated for Tuesday at SCC, before home dates with E.D. White and the district opener with De La Salle. Those teams are a combined 35-6 thus far this season.

“It’s a whale of a week coming up for us,” Todd said.

“We’re on a little win streak, and hopefully we’ve fostered enough confidence to allow us to stay in the game against teams at that level.”
