LAPLACE — St. Joan of Arc Catholic School was recently awarded a service learning grant from the Joe W. and Dorothy Dorsett Brown Foundation that will be carried out in fifth grade English-language arts classes.

The classes were given $1,202 to fund the projects and activities they will complete as they partner with Covenant House to promote literacy.

The students will write, illustrate and publish their own books to give to the children of young mothers at Covenant House.

Puppets will be made to represent the characters in their books, and they will be presented to the children in cloth bags decorated by the students along with their unique books.

Each mother and child will also receive a bookmark, prayer card, toothbrushes, toothpaste and more books. In addition to the money awarded to the fifth graders, Jeffrey Montz was presented the Principal’s Award for $1,000.
