EDGARD — West St. John continued their hot start to the volleyball season, sweeping Warren Easton in three games at home Tuesday, 25-14, 25-11 and 25-11.

Kaieonne Sorapuru had five digs and three kills. Maya Trench made seven kills while Dmyriah Herbert made three kills. Brittany August served five aces.

The Rams moved to 6-2 on the season with the win, bouncing back from a loss against Episcopal last week.

“We played very well,” said West St. John coach Glenda Mattos. “We ran our offense well and our defense even better. We played pretty well against Episcopal, but we made some mistakes to give away points, and we didn’t do that Tuesday. We really cleaned up the mental mistakes.”

Trench, already known for her basketball and track and field exploits at WSJ, has turned into one of the team’s most dangerous hitters.

“She’s an all-around athlete,” Mattos said. “She really knows how to go attack the ball. She’s not tall, but she can really jump.

“That athleticism really gives her an edge in front by the net, where we need her.”

Sorapuru, Mattos said, has seen her confidence soar after making major strides last season.

“We’re still working on some things with her,” said Mattos.

“I’m not sure even still that she grasps how athletic she is. She’s doing very well this year. She’s attacking the ball.”

West St. John will face Donaldsonville Monday, St. James Wednesday and Family Christian Thursday over their next three games.

Mattos said the Rams hope to keep their winning ways going in that stretch so they may hit district play running.

“We know what we need to improve and work on, and as a coach I’m working on some things to get us ready to go,” she said.
