Keller: Morning Bible meeting sheds some light

I’m not a regular at the 5:15 Thursday morning men’s Bible study in Paulina, but this week I attended.

I didn’t plan to attend, but I woke up at 3 a.m. and couldn’t go back to sleep, so after 30 minutes of struggling with the thought of going, I decided to go.

My friend Danny Louque started the meeting 14 years ago. It is never cancelled, even on Thanksgiving, Christmas, New Years, Fourth of July, regardless of the celebration; men gather to discuss what Jesus is doing in their lives.

When I arrived, I sat by a man I’ve known only a short time. He said, “Last night I had an idea you would be here this morning.” I don’t know how he knew I’d be there, but I needed to be there.

There were 28 men in attendance, and everyone was given a chance to share. The subject was, “Whose report will you believe, God’s or the world’s?”

Neal Poche, one of the regulars, shared that when he and his wife Wendy got married, they were excited about raising a family.

After ten years and four miscarriages, God blessed them with a boy, Neal III. After two more miscarriages, He blessed them with a girl, Michaela.

His testimony was to believe God’s report. He and Wendy did and were blessed with the desires of their hearts.

A middle-aged retired man said, “Two years ago, if someone had told me I would pass up a camping trip, which included playing cards and drinking beer to attend a Bible meeting, I would have thought they were crazy. My first excuse was that I had other plans.”

One of the men called me and said, “What’s so important?” I told him I couldn’t miss my Bible study group. He laughed and said that he didn’t call him again.

One 20-year-old young man said, “I was on the road to destruction until I had an experience with Jesus.

“Today, I just bought a trailer home, a piece of property near my mom and dad, have a good job and am going to school.”

These were just three of the testimonies shared within an hour Thursday morning at 5:15.

It’s amazing what happens when God is in the center of anything!
