Judge Mary Hotard Becnel, 40th Judicial District Court, Division B judge, has announced she is a candidate for re-election.
She said it has been an honor to serve St. John the Baptist Parish.
“A fair and impartial judiciary is of great importance, and by now you know that you can count on me,” she said. “I have worked in our courthouse more than 40 years, starting as a secretary and court reporter, working my way through school to become a lawyer, and then serving as your judge.
“Being an effective judge requires more than legal knowledge; it also requires a commonsense approach, which results in not just a decision, but a solution if possible. Whether a criminal, civil, family or juvenile case, I consider every case an important one that has consequences and affects lives.”
Becnel said during her years on the bench she has taken seriously the position as a public servant beyond the specified judicial duties.
“As a judge, I have had the opportunity to observe problems in our community that cannot be solved in the normal course of business,” she said. “Therefore, I have reached out and initiated Truancy Court and CHARM School for the benefit of at-risk youth and families. Truancy Court addresses the problems of families and students that are much deeper than simply failing to attend school.”
Having noticed many girls coming through the court system for minor offenses or improper behavior, she said she realized they needed instruction in modifying their behavior.
“So, I established CHARM School to address these issues and prevent recidivism,” Becnel said. “Additionally, I helped found the River Region Arts and Humanities Council, which has raised hundreds of thousands of dollars for grants to our local schools and art and culture-related organizations.
“I hope you agree that my record reflects my dedication to my job and serving our parish. I would like to continue doing so for another term. There remains a lot of work to be done, and no one will work harder for you. Experience counts in a judicial election.
“I am very grateful for your past confidence and support. I hope you feel that you can give me that support once again.
“Thank you.”
