Watkins named Gates scholar

LAPLACE — Juan Watkins Jr., a 2014 graduate of St. Charles Catholic High School, was chosen to be part of the Class of 2014 Gates Millennium Scholars Program.

The Gates Millennium Scholars Program selects 1,000 students from across the country from over 52,000 applications to receive a good-through-graduation scholarship to use at any college or university of their choice.

Watkins will be attending Morehouse College in the fall.  

Students must maintain a cumulative high school GPA of 3.3, and Watkins went beyond those requirements with a cumulative GPA of 3.78.

In addition, he was very active in school and community events.

He participated in March for Life and Thanksgiving food drives.

Watkins was a member of the National Honor Society, Beta Club, Drama Club, Science Club, Ambassadors Club and a Student Council Officer at St. Charles Catholic High School.

Recognized as leaders of America’s future, funds are available to each Gates Millennium Scholar to attend any accredited college or university located in the United States through a scholarship funded by the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation.
