KELLER: Family bonds usher in unmatched riches

Published 11:45 pm Friday, July 11, 2014

I’ve often said that I could live alone, however, that all changed this week.

Jeanne was asked to go to Perdido Key with our daughters Ronny and Kay and their extended families. I was also invited, but the beach is not my thing.

In all, Jeanne spent the week with two of her daughters, their husbands and 19 others, including grandchildren, their spouses, great grand children and two friends.

I was excited that Jeanne had the opportunity to go, in spite of the fact she’s not a beach person and doesn’t swim.

The one thing I was sure of is that my wife would have a great time because being wither family is one of the most important things in her life.

If you were to measure riches by material possessions, we would fall short. But believe me, we are one of the richest couples in the world, with four children who have never disrespected us and are as unselfish as any people that I know.

I don’t know if any one them could quote Ephesians 6: 1-3, but they have lived it:

“Children, obey your parents in the Lord, for this is right. Honor your father and mother — which is the first commandment with a promise — so that it may go well with you and that you may enjoy long life on the earth.”

Yes, our children have obeyed and honored us.

This week, just like it’s been all of her life, the children and grandchildren included Jeanne in their trips.

She frequently goes with them to the mall and any time they go out to eat. It never ceases to amaze me how Jeanne can be tired, but when the phone rings with an invitation to go anywhere, she gets a miraculous, instant energy burst.

Today, when her week at the beach comes to an end, Jeanne will come home and I will have to gear myself up to hear an account of everything that went on all week. I just pray she shortens some of the stories and I have patience.

God has blessed us abundantly, but the greatest gifts are our children and our children’s children.
