GARYVILLE — Irene Burl said most parents just wish it lasted longer.

The supervisor for the St. John the Baptist Parish Summer Camp’s Garyville/Mt. Airy Math & Science Magnet School location said the six-week camp comes to an end Thursday with a party for the children at City Park.

Ongoing since June 2, the camp has entertained youth between 4 and 12 from 9 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. Monday through Thursday.

Burl said some parents have asked for the days to be extended throughout the week and for the camp to go through July. Daily activities include arts and crafts, sports, swimming, academic enrichment, games, field trips and character counts lessons.

“Some parents would like there to be more tutoring, but others say it’s the summer so let the children have fun,” Burl said. “We do try to teach the kids, but we always do it with a game.”

Burl said the most difficult part of this summer’s camp was coordinating bus transportation for 130 children with four buses, but overall, everything was a success.
