Oertling named finalist for 2015 Louisiana Principal of the Year

Hahnville High School Principal Ken Oertling is a finalist for the 2015 Louisiana Principal of the Year named by the State Department of Education.
Oertling is one of ten principals selected as a finalist for demonstrating an ability to implement rigorous instructional practices and positively impacting student growth.
The former United States Navy Sailor of the Year in 1996 will represent the district in the state competition.
“Ken has served our country and now he serves the students and community of St. Charles Parish,” Superintendent Felecia Gomez-Walker said. “He embodies the characteristics of a great leader, and we are proud to call him one of our own. Please join me in congratulating Ken on this very deserving accomplishment.”
All finalists will be honored at the 8th Annual Cecil J. Picard Educator Excellence Symposium and Celebration July 12 in Baton Rouge.
Oertling received his bachelor of science in science education and his master of wducation in administration and supervision from Southeastern Louisiana University after serving six years in the United States Navy.
Prior to his appointment in 2010 as principal, he served Hahnville High School as a physical science and biology teacher, coach, administrative monitor and assistant principal, working with safe schools, athletics, at-risk programs, high-stakes testing and scheduling.
He is a member of the Ameri-can Association of School Administrators, Knights of Columbus, Louisiana Association of Principals, Louisiana Association of Computer Using Educators, Louisiana High School Athletic Association, National Association of Black Secondary Educators and Veterans of Foreign Affairs.
