AMA — Excessive speed is the expected cause of a fatal wreck in St. Charles Parish this past weekend involving two vehicles, including a motorcycle.
Louisiana State Police troopers responded to a fatality crash on River Road near Airport Lane in St. Charles Parish at approximately 5:10 p.m.
Preliminary investigation revealed a 2000 Harley Davidson motorcycle operated by William Ziebel of Waggaman was traveling eastbound on River Road, and a 2012 Freightliner operated by Russell Mason of Marrero was traveling westbound on River Road.
“Ziebel approached a right-hand curve in the roadway, failed to stay in his lane, crossed the center line, entered the westbound lane and the front of the (motorcycle) struck the front of the Freightliner,” the release said. “Ziebel sustained life-threatening injuries and was taken to St. Charles Hospital, where he was later pronounced dead.”
Troopers report Ziebel was wearing a novelty helmet, which is not Department of Transportation approved.
“Speed is suspected on Ziebel’s part, and it is unknown if impairment is a factor,” the release said. “Mason was restrained and was not injured. Impairment is not suspected on his part.”
A blood sample for analysis was collected from Ziebel and Mason, who voluntarily submitted a sample.
Master Trooper Greg Marchand of the Louisiana State Police said the timeline for blood sample analysis to be completed varies and could not be pinpointed at this time.
Marchand said the wreck remains under investigation, adding Mason has not been cited or charged with any wrongdoing.
