Summer programs offered in St. John

LAPLACE — Summer is quickly approaching, and the St. John Parish Parks and Recreation Department is gearing up for its summer programs and activities for residents of all ages.

Registration is open for the St. John the Baptist Parish Summer Camp for children ages 4 through 12.

The camp is held from 9 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. Monday through Thursday, beginning June 2 and ending July 10.

The registration fee is $150 for the six-week camp.

Daily activities include arts and crafts, team sports, swimming, academic enrichment, games, field trips and more.

Registration forms are available at the Parks & Recreation office (gym) at 200 Regala Park Road in Reserve and can be downloaded from sjbparish.com. The registration deadline is Friday and a $50 late charge will be administered after the deadline. Lunch will be provided through the St. John Parish Summer Feeding Program.

The recreation department is also accepting applications for summer employment for camp counselors and certified lifeguards.

Assistance with lifeguard certification will be provided if needed. Employment applications are available at sjbparish.com, at the parks and recreation office and at the Edgard Council Office, 2393 Highway 18 in Edgard.

Registration is underway for the Ashley Kelley Swim program, which will be offered free of charge to children ages 5 -17 at the Alex “Roland” Reese Swimming Pool at REGALA Park.

Classes will be in the evenings at 5:30, 6:30 and 7:30 p.m. For more information on this program, call 985-652-9569 or visit the parish website.

Zumba classes, utilizing Latin-Inspired dance fitness that incorporates elements of hip-hop and salsa, are offered at 6:30 p.m. Tuesdays and Thursdays at Regla Gym.

Free play basketball is also offered from 6 to 9 p.m. on Monday and Wednesday nights at the gym.

The Parks and Recreation Department will be offering water aerobics classes for the first time this summer.
