Tara Cox, a social studies teacher at East St. John High School, was recently named the Louisiana National History Day History Teacher of the Year for the Senior Division.

The award is given to one high school and middle school teacher in each state.

The winners of the national awards will be selected from among the state awardees. Each state winner was awarded $500.

Cox was required to submit an essay on the usage of primary sources and integration of the history day program in the classroom, provide classroom samples of such assignments and obtain two professional references from supervisors.

Cox was recognized at Thursday’s St. John the Baptist Parish School Board meeting for her accomplishment.
