Boating safety in focus this week

LAPLACE  — In recognition of National Safe Boating Week, which kicks off today and lasts until May 23, the United States Coast Guard Auxiliary will host several public safety exhibits. 

United States Coast Guard Auxiliarists will be available from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. today and May 23 in Pineville at the Lake Buhlow and Red River Buhlow facility buildings to hand out safety pamphlets and federal regulation booklets. They will also instruct the boating public on safety issues, including the proper fitting of personal flotation devices and proper fire extinguisher use.

Auxiliarists will also be at Hammond’s Academy Sporting Goods from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. today and Covington’s Academy Sporting Goods from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. May 24.

In conjunction with National Safe Boating Week, the National Safe Boating Council kicks off its national Wear It! campaign promoting safe boating and life jacket wear today.
