LAPLACE — The St. Charles Catholic golf team kept its hot start going this week with a victory at Riverlands over John Curtis and Lutcher.

Emile Cupit’s score of 41 paced the Comets, who finished with a team score of 173, besting Curtis’ 195 and Lutcher’s 204.

The Comets’ Cameron Torres, Dalton Landry and Jacob Jensen each scored 44, helping to lead SCC to a 9-2 record to begin the year.

“That’s about our average this season,” said St. Charles coach Gary Zeringue of the score of 172. “We’ve been in the low 160s a couple of times. Usually we’re right in that 170-175 range.”

Zeringue said that the Comets’ success has been, in part, due to the fact that most of the team is back from a season ago. SCC lost two seniors from the 2013 roster; everyone returns otherwise, and there are no seniors on the team this season.

“I’m really excited about our future. The program is in good shape,” said Zeringue.

Torres’ 44 was a season-high score for him; he’s scored below 40 four times already this season, Zeringue noted, and is enjoying a breakout season.

“He’s our leader, and that comes down to more than just the scores he posts,” said Zeringue. “Our guys look up to him. He’s got ambitions of maybe playing at the next level.”

Last week, St. Charles faced Vandebilt Catholic and shot 181 to defeat the Terriers. Torres led the way with a score of 42. Daniel Jaubert shot 45, Landry 46 and Cupit 48.

SCC shot one of its best scores of the season in a win over Curtis and De La Salle last week, netting a 163 to best both teams. Torres shot 39, Jensen 40, while Cupit and Jaubert each shot 42.
