St. Peter Catholic Church in Reserve will celebrate its 150th anniversary on April 5 during the 5 p.m. vigil Mass at the church, 1550 River Road. Archbishop Gregory Aymond will be the celebrant. A reception will follow at St. Peter School, 188 W. 17th St. in Reserve.

St. Peter Catholic Church in Reserve was founded by Archbishop Odin in April 1864. Father Pierre Lacour, the founding pastor, kept busy as he served the sparse and poor east bank of the Mississippi River community of St. John the Baptist Civil Parish from 1864 until his death in 1871. Some historians said that Father Lacour had a special devotion to St. Peter, and that is why the name, was bestowed on this new church.

The anniversary committee is planning several activities throughout 2014. A family picnic, an All Saint’s Day gumbo, a cemetery walk and Christmas Eve bonfire on the Mississippi River levee are among the activities. Banners commemorating the occasion will be erected throughout Reserve. Posters and T-shirts also will be sold.

Former parishioners, current parishioners and other supporters and friends of the church are invited and encouraged to attend all events.
