LAPLACE – The 16th annual Household Hazardous Materials Collection Day will be held from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. on Saturday, March 15. The event is sponsored by industries in St. John the Baptist, St. James and St. Charles parishes.

The 2014 event will offer two convenient sites for River Parishes residents to bring household hazardous materials for proper disposal and/or recycling.

One collection site will be at the St. Charles Parish School Board Office parking lot, 13855 River Road, Luling.

The other collection site will be in LaPlace at the New Wine Ministries parking lot, 1921 Airline Highway.

The following household hazardous materials will be accepted and properly disposed or recycled: oil-based paint, latex paint, solvents, tires (limit five per vehicle and one delivery only), automotive and other rechargeable batteries, household cleaning products, acids/bases, used oil, antifreeze, aerosol cans, fluorescent lamps, pesticides, herbicides, scrap metal, major appliances, used computers and electronics.

The following items are prohibited from the collection: explosives, ammunition, infectious medical wastes, unidentifiable materials, compressed gas cylinders, radioactive waste, smoke alarms, asbestos, high school lab wastes or commercial/governmental facility waste, including in-home business waste, paper, cardboard, aluminum cans, plastic, glass or construction debris.

“At last year’s Household Hazardous Materials Collection event, 104 volunteers collected over 29 tons of potentially harmful materials, which was prepared for recycling, recovery, treatment or disposal,” said Lynette Currier of OxyChem, an event chair.

Currier said last year 480 residents participated in the event.
