LAPLACE — When East St. John and Destrehan get together on the basketball court, one may throw records out the door.
But though a game DHS squad pushed their favored rivals for most of the night, Tre’Von Jasmine’s game-high 17 points led East St. John to their 17th win of the season Monday night, a 62-48 victory at home.
“It was back and forth, especially early,” said East St. John coach Yussef Jasmine. “We were able to take control, but their bigs got them off to a good start. Those guys were really good and they outplayed us inside.
Edwin Winston added 13 points for East St. John (17-4, 7-0).
It was East St. John’s 10th consecutive victory.
Blake Benson led Destrehan (10-14, 2-5) with 15 points, while fellow frontcourt star Alfred Richardson added 10.
East St. John led 29-23 at halftime, but began to pull away in the third quarter after starting the second half on an 8-0 run.
The game was moved up from Tuesday to Monday due to the week’s projected weather issues.
Though ESJ committed 19 turnovers in the game, Yussef Jasmine didn’t feel moving things up had any kind of a negative effect.
“I knew about it Sunday. Honestly, it kind of worked out. With us being out of school Tuesday, Wednesday, it was kinda like playing a Friday night game for us,” he said.
It was the latest team-leading scoring effort from Tre’Von Jasmine.
His coach — and father — said that it wasn’t his most consistent effort, but that he stepped up at some key times.
“He came through for us when we needed a basket,” said Yussef Jasmine.
East St. John’s next game will be Tuesday at Central Lafourche.
