LAPLACE – Riverside’s added a pair of ties to a record that was already even, moving to a mark of 2-2-2 last week after tying St. Martin’s, 2-2, and Catholic Pointe Coupee, 1-1.
Sisters Jordan and Maddie Duhon each scored goals to knot things up against the Saints, while Maddie Duhon scored the Rebel goal against Catholic.
Last season the Rebel girls set program best marks for wins in a season and captured their first undefeated district championship. That was a senior laden team, though, so this year’s Rebels are gaining experience on the fly as a result, with just two senior starters.
“We’re very young. It’s a transition for us,” said Riverside coach Mert Deger.
“We’re looking to build it back up this year, with a goal of making it back to the playoffs.”
One of those seniors is Jordan Duhon, who was Riverside’s leading goal scorer a before she was sidelined due to an appendectomy, halting what had been a red hot start.
“She’s the leader of our team,” said Deger. “She’s taken that leadership role.’
“She’s not just playing well, but she’s also teaching our younger players the right way to play.”
Maddie Duhon and Caitlin Roussel are among other key returning pieces.
“Maddie is really stepping up,” said Deger. “And Caitlin is another experienced player as a junior. We’re expecting a lot from her this year.”
The Rebels are back in action on Saturday as they host Hannan. The game is set to begin at 3 p.m.
