LAPLACE — Destrehan’s seniors had never beaten Hahnville, the Wildcats losing four straight to the archrival Tigers.

But when they finally broke through, they made it matter.

The Wildcats dominated en route to a 49-0 victory on Hahnville’s home turf, pushing their record to 5-0 and perhaps once and for all cementing themselves as a Superdome favorite headed into the second half of the regular season.

Destrehan (5-0, 2-0) led 28-0 after a quarter and 42-0 at halftime. The Wildcats outgained Hahnville (2-3, 1-1) 340-97 in the game.

Donovan Isom was the night’s biggest star and then some. He tossed four touchdown passes in the first quarter – a 53-yarder to Kirk Merritt, an 11-yarder to John Williams, a 16-yarder to Alfred Smith and a 50-yarder to Williams — and added a rushing score in the second quarter.

Isom went to the bench midway through the second quarter, his work done for the night.

Destrehan coach Stephen Robicheaux was especially proud of his defense.

“It’s so important what they did. We hold Hahnville under 100 total yards … We challenged our kids to step up and do what had to be done to stop the run. They did an unbelievable job, and it was an unbelievable job by my staff as well.”

Isom continued his torrid pace this season. He entered the game with 13 touchdown passes and no interceptions and now has a sparkling 17-0 touchdown-to-interception ratio.

“He’s having a tremendous year. The best part is that he doesn’t have to do it all himself,” said Robicheaux. “We’ve got good weapons around him, a line that gives him time and a defense that steps up. We’ve got a real good mix right now.”
