Destrehan High School senior Zakyra Adams was selected to attend Xavier University’s SOAR1 Program this past summer. Along with students from all over the United Stated, Adams participated in intensive studies in analytical reasoning, test prep, reading comprehension, vocabulary development and college literature.
The program’s participants did a book study on “The Other Wes Moore” during the three-week camp. Adams and her classmates took field trips to the World War II Museum, Xavier’s science laboratories and LSU Medical Center. During the visit to LSU Medical Center, the students viewed bodies and organs that had been donated for medical research and discussed pertinent studies with African-American medical students.
