RESERVE – Kevin George, St. John the Baptist Parish’s new superintendent, will host two informative workshops next week to address questions about Common Core standards.
The first meeting will be held on Oct. 1 at West St. John Elementary at 5 p.m. The second will be held on Oct. 2 at LaPlace Elementary, also at 5 p.m. George announced the workshops during the school board’s Sept. 19 meeting, saying he and some board members had received many questions from parents’ about the changes.
The two meetings will discuss how Common Core was developed, what it is and what parents can do to help their children at home. George will also explain Enterprise, the progess monitoring tool that the school district will utilize throughout the year.
“Speaking with parents, they were concerned. They wanted to know how they could help their children and wanted to know more information about Common Core—why we’re doing it, where did it come from, why is it so difficult,” said George. “I want to diffuse the level of anxiety that parents are facing and give them tools to help their children. I want them to understand what Common Core is and is not. There are so many rumors out there that I want them to hear it from me, as a leader of the school system.”
