RESERVE – St. John the Baptist Parish summer campers learned the basics of the ball during a basketball camp sponsored by former District 3 Councilman Charles Julien on Monday.
Julien said he recruited the best local talent to act as counselors for the children — Jordan Dabney, Darrion Cook, Charvon “Von” Julian, Devante Francois, Jordan Andrews, Kiera Joseph, Chari Julien, Maya Trench, Kyla Broomfield and Curtis Thomas all supervised separate mini “clinics,” in which groups of children learned staples of the game. All of the counselors have history with the St. John recreational program.
Jamal Breaux, a former East St. John basketball and baseball player from Reserve, was also tapped to demonstrate the game. Breaux was the 2008 Southwestern Athletic Conference’s preseason defensive player of the year.
“I think that just introducing the kids to the game, or an environment that’s conducive to learning, is healthy,” said Julien.
