CONVENT – The St. James Parish Council at Wednesday night’s meeting appointed a temporary justice of the peace to fill the unexpired term of Eileen Jasmin, the former District 6 justice of the peace who was indicted last month.

Vondra Etienne Steib was appointed to the position in a unanimous vote from the council. Steib is the director of special education for the St. James Parish Public School System and will serve as justice until the election can be held to officially fill the vacancy.

The special primary election will be held Oct. 19. The qualifying date for potential candidates will be Aug. 14 through 16.
