Read for the Record is an annual event designed to raise awareness about the importance of early literacy skills. The book read by participants this year was “Ladybug Girl and the Bug Squad” by David Soman and Jacky Davis. On Read for the Record day, team members from the S.T.A.R. or Students Teaching and Reaching program at the Satellite Center read to children in St. Charles Parish kindergarten and preschool classes. With the help of A.A. Songy, Norco Elementary, New Sarpy Elementary, Holy Family Preschool, Allemands Elementary and the St. Charles Parish Public School’s Headstart programs, more than 800 students were read to. Not only did the S.T.A.R. team members read, but they had the kindergarten and preschool students engage in literacy activities such as creating ladybug puppets. When asked about Read for the Record, S.T.A.R. team member Dejah Brown said, “I really enjoyed reading to the children. It was a great learning experience and strengthened my desire to be a teacher.”
