DONALDSONVILLE — St. Charles coach Frank Monica was cautiously optimistic about the way his Comets performed in the two weeks prior to Friday’s district opener, winning convincingly against McCoy and Jeanerette. But he’d truly find out about his team, he said, once district play began.
Certainly, the Comets made a statement.
St. Charles piled up 280 yards and seven touchdown on the ground as it trounced host Donaldsonville, 50-6.
SCC (3-2) attempted just one pass in the game, after attempting none a week ago.
Austin Weber rushed for a game-high 115 yards and three touchdowns. Erron Lewis added 72 yards and two touchdowns on nine carries and Brandon Zimmer rushed six times for 36 yards and two scores.
The Comets held Donaldsonville (1-5) to minus-10 yards rushing.
The Tigers’ Leandre James completed 28 of his 44 passes for 235 yards and a touchdown. St. Charles intercepted him twice — one of those negated a potential score as Trey Southerland picked off James at the SCC 2 late in the first half.
Steven Sullivan caught 13 passes for 156 yards and a touchdown for DHS.
Weber’s first score came from 12 yards away to put SCC ahead 7-0. Lewis then scored on runs of 25 and 26 yards to push the Comets out to a 22-0 lead (SCC also converted a two-point conversion on a Weber pass to Cameron Taylor).
Weber’s 19-yard touchdown run made it 29-0, then Zimmer pounded in two scores from inside the 5. Weber capped SCC’s scoring with a 15-yard run.
