EDGARD — West St. John will enter district play with a winning record next week after notching its sixth victory of the season Wednesday, a 25-13, 25-22 and 25-17 win over Family Christian.

Tahajenik Howard had eight aces for West St. John. Sydnei Young notched seven kills. Deja Feist had four kills and three blocks and Kaieonne Sorapuru had two blocks.

The Lady Rams (6-5) have won four of their last five matches and are playing the kind of volleyball that coach Glenda Rush envisioned at the outset of the season.

“I thought my girls played with a lot of control,” said Rush. “I didn’t have to call many time outs or settle them down.”

Rush noted that the team has been communicating on the floor and showing a much firmer grasp of the offensive and defensive concepts that Rush has implemented this season, her first back as head coach after a two-year hiatus.

“Especially over the past three games,” said Rush. “We’ve had Donasia Bell calling plays at setter. We’ve also tightened up our defense up the middle, and that was a big key against Family Christian. They really attacked the middle and dinked a lot … our girls adjusted and came up to eliminate that.

“Our players handled their responsibilities and were where they needed to be nine times out of 10. They’re not only understanding what they need to do, but they’re grasping why we do those things.”

The team’s scheduled matchup with Capitol last Monday was cancelled.

District 5-V play opens up next week for the Rams, with matches against Central Catholic (Oct. 9) and Houma Christian (Oct. 11).

Central Catholic (11-7) is currently ranked third in Division V in terms of power points. West St. John is ranked 22nd and Houma Christian (3-11) is ranked 30th.
