From St. Charles Parish Sheriff Greg Champagne: “The latest word we have is that winds will begin ramping up as the evening progresses to the point where we will see sustained hurricane force winds after midnight in the 70 to 80 mph range for several hours well into the morning, with gusts in the low 90s.

“Based upon past experience, electricity usually goes out when wind speeds reach the 40 to 50 mph range. This could be anywhere from 8 to 10 p.m. So you should have your radio with batteries and flashlights ready.

“Hurricane force winds will continue until the late morning. Again, the good news is that we will only be experiencing a Category 1 hurricane, but it will be relatively lengthy, being 8 to 10 hours in duration. It will be a windy night and morning.

“Flash flooding is possible depending upon the rate and frequency of rainfall.

“The Montz area on the east bank will experience storm surge via Lake Pontchartrain.

“The West Bank area will likely not see peak storm surge to our south until well after the storm has passed Wednesday evening and into Thursday.

“I will attempt to post updates provided cell and internet service holds up. If anyone sees anything or anyone suspicious meaning automobiles or pedestrians out during the storm, note the description and call 911 immediately.”
