The St. John the Baptist Parish Council hosted their first “Back to School Extravaganza” at REGALA Gymnasium. The event was held to provide free backpacks and school supplies to children in preparation for the 2012-13 school year. Three hundred youth pre-registered in one day to attend the event.

The Extravaganza was organized by the Parish Council and was co-sponsored by the local non-profit organization Blessed to be a Blessing. The event was made possible through private donations and support from DuPont, St. John Parish United Way, Dr. Jack Newell DDS, St. John Parish Health and Human Services Department and St. Charles Community Health Center. 

In addition to school supplies, free health screenings, hygiene and health information and free dental kits were provided. All that Kreations LL was on hand for face painting and all attendees were treated to pizza and drinks. 

Because so many families are in need and could use a helping hand, the council organized this event with hopes of providing kids with the tools needed to be successful inside and outside of the classroom.

“We were shocked by the demand for these services and plan on expanding the event next year,” said Councilwoman-at-Large Jaclyn Hotard.

Council members Lucien Gauff, Jaclyn Hotard, Lennix Madere, Michael Wright, Larry Snyder and Cheryl Millet along with Councilman Marvin Perrilloux’s wife represented the parish council at the event. Many volunteers worked to make the event a huge success and the sponsors look forward to expanding the event next year.
