The Holy Spirit, the GPS to Heaven

I’ve repeated many times in previous articles how important the early morning men’s meetings are to me.

The first meeting was started in 1988 in LaPlace and was held on Friday mornings at 6:15. This meeting is still held today, and there is also a meeting in Garyville on Tuesday mornings at 6:15 and in Paulina on Thursdays at 5:15 a.m.

The purpose of these meetings is, first of all, to have a closer relationship with Jesus that will encourage us to be better Christians and develop a godly character. The other benefit is that we develop a more personal relationship with other men, which helps us to be transparent in our daily walk.

This past Thursday, Steve Nosacka was the moderator and the topic came from the Book of John, Chapter 14. He shared about the Trinity – God the Father, our Savior Jesus Christ the Son and the Holy Spirit, our Power, with the emphasis being on the Holy Spirit.

Steve likes to relate spiritual things to our daily walk in life. He started talking about how a GPS can bring us to any location when given the correct address. The comparison was that the Holy Spirit is our Guide to help us get to Heaven.

The meetings are mostly serious, but with the cross section of men, we also enjoy a little humor.

Ervin “Boolee” Roussel is one of the regulars at the Thursday meeting and is always one of the first to speak. This week, thinking about a GPS, he said that last year he bought his wife, Shirley, a new Camry. He enjoyed being able to do that and thought the car was very nice. A few weeks later, a friend visited him with a new top of the line Avalon. Bragging about his new car, he told Boolee, “I have a GPS in mine!”  Boolee (I’m sure being sarcastic) said, “That’s good, but when I get in my car, I know where I’m going. I don’t need a GPS.”

Later, while sitting on the swing, his friend was about to leave and wanted to impress Boolee a little more, so he pressed a button on his key chain, and his motor started.

He smiled, looked at Boolee and asked, “How do you like that?” Being aggravated, Boolee answered, “That’s OK, but I bet you can’t make it move from here.” That’s typical Boolee. What you see is what you get.

Believe it or not, in spite of all that, it was a great meeting. The message of how the Holy Spirit should take an active part in our lives came across loud and clear.
