The end of the Sheriff Wayne Jones era

Published 12:00 am Saturday, June 30, 2012

Today, Saturday, June 30, 2012, at midnight, Sheriff Wayne Jones’ era as St. John Parish Sheriff came to an end. Mike Tregre will begin a new era as the parish’s new top law enforcement official.

Wayne has served the parish well for the last 16 years. Now he will begin a new chapter in his life, which I have no doubt will be one of his most exciting.

As a supporter and friend of Wayne, I wish him and Jo-Ann the best of everything in life, especially, good health and happiness, while enjoying their children and grandchildren.

As Mike Tregre takes over, I wish him the best. I ask that God will give him wisdom and that he realizes man doesn’t have all the answers, but Our Heavenly Father does.

The responsibility that comes with being sheriff is an awesome one. The majority of people want good law enforcement for everybody but themselves. Mike, winning the election might have been easy compared to being a leader for approximately 300 employees.

As a lifelong resident of St. John Parish, I’ve seen many changes. People, not only here, but throughout the country, have become more selfish and have the “what’s in it for me” attitude.

With that said, Mike, the challenges ahead that you face will take courage and determination not to be a people pleaser, but one of God’s selective servants, devoted to the cause of serving all the people.

Mike, the scripture I leave both you and Wayne with is I Corinthians 2: 9 which reads: “Eye has not seen, nor ear heard, nor have entered into the heart of man, the things which God has prepared for those who love Him.”
