PATTERSON — Riverside’s Sean Flynn capped a tremendous season Wednesday, taking fifth overall at the Class 2A state golf championship match at the Atchfalaya Golf Course at Idlewild.
Meanwhile, St. Charles Catholic’s Lance Perrilloux led the way for local players at the Class 3A championship match, finishing 18th overall at the event’s conclusion Thursday at Beaver Creek Golf Club in Zachary. .
Players that finish within the top 20 of his classification cement themselves as All-State selections, with the top 10 designated as first teamers.
Flynn shot 76 in the first round and 71 in the second to finish with a two day total of 147, tying Episcopal’s Ross Davis for fifth place.
“Sean really played well,” said Riverside coach Roy Aubert. “On the second day, he just missed on a couple of birdie putts that would have put him at 69 for the last round.”
Aubert said that Flynn shot 34 on the front nine of the course in a practice round Monday.
“He’s very comfortable on that course,” said Aubert. “All three of our guys had a strong practice round.”
Calvary Baptist’s Sam Burns won the event with a score of 138.
Flynn’s teammates Deuce Wallace and Cory Costanza finished their season’s in state competition after qualifying as individuals. Wallace finished with a score of 169, shooting 85 and 84 in his respective rounds. Costanza Shot 184, shooting 95 and 89.
“I’m pleased with how we performed,” said Aubert. “Deuce played very well, especially for being in his first year. Cory had a rough first day but did a nice job bouncing back on the second.”
Perrilloux, meanwhile, shot 78 on his first day at Beaver Creek, then followed that up with a score of 84 on the second.
St. Charles finished eighth in the field with a team score of 750. Loyola Prep finished first to capture the Class 3A championship.
Cameron Torres was the Comets’ second leading scorer, shooting 91 and 89 for a final score of 180. Dalton Landry shot 99 and 101 for a score of 200. Emile Cupit (106, 105, 211) and Jason Andrepont (115, 102, 217) rounded out SCC’s scorers.
“What I was pleased with the most was the consistency we had, “said Zeringue. “Everyone shot very close to their usual average.
“Every person and team wants to shoot better than they are. We shot what we are.”
Zeringue said that this season goes down as one of the most memorable and enjoyable of his 12 year tenure as head coach.
“With three freshman on our team, in their first season of competition, to have the experience of the state tournament is something I couldn’t give them in six months of practices. Nothing really compares,” he said.
As for Perrilloux, Zeringue said the senior leaves a strong legacy at St. Charles after competing in his final prep match.
“Lance has easily invested more into golf than anyone I’ve coached over these 12 years,” said Zeringue. “It’s a little sad for me today to know that this was the end. He did an outstanding job, and he set a great example for my younger kids.”
