LaPlace – Wee Care has had its fair share of fun and learning with a bunch of love thrown in.
In January, students learned about the community helper, the fireman. The St. John Parish volunteer and career firefighters brought their fire trucks for the students to explore and taught them all about fire safety at home. The Louisiana Department of Agriculture and Forestry brought Smokey the Bear for a visit, and the students learned about outdoor fire safety. January was also a month of learning about personal health. Robert Ory, DDS, and Deidra Bullock, dental assistant, showed the 3- and 4-year-olds the correct way to brush their teeth and why taking care of teeth so important.
In February, Wee Care held their annual Teddy Bear Clinic. Pediatricians Rita Lawrence M.D. from Pelican Pediatrics and Wendi DeFrank M.D. from Rainbow Pediatrics as well as nurses from the LaPlace area participated. Physicians and nurses helped the students examine their stuffed animals using stethoscopes and tongue depressors and helped soothe booboos with a band-aid and medicine.
March brought Grandparent’s Day, which children and grandparents alike enjoy. Students sang several songs for their grandparents and then went to sit in their laps to enjoy donuts for the morning group or jambalaya with the afternoon group.
“I don’t know who enjoys this more, the students or the grandparents. They both light up when they see each other and both don’t want to leave the other.” said Kelly Guillory, assistant at Wee Care.
Wee Care’s registration for the 2012-13 school years is now open. For more information on the program or would like to register, call 985-652-4096.
